Brown Tape is one of the most popular packaging products. It’s all the same right? Wrong.

We stock the popular 2” size in 5 different grades and it’s definitely a question of you get what you pay for.

In our opinion, based on years of experience, the best is still PVC with solvent adhesive.

PVC is best and can be torn by hand, however very cold conditions it can have a tendency to split. It is almost the most expensive.

Polypropylene will stretch but not split.

Film thickness can vary from 30 micron down to 23 micron.

Our favourite is natural rubber, which we refer to as solvent.

You can also get synthetic rubber (hot melt), but we have never really got on well with it.

Acrylic adhesive is water based and in our opinion not as good as solvent.

The best is obviously the dearest, but not everyone needs to use the best, our advice is to start somewhere in the middle (00243) and see if the tape works for you.

We stock 5 different types, so if you buy a box and decide it isn't right for you, try some of the others until you find the one that does the job.

00150 - PVC with solvent adhesive. The best tape but the dearest. Very quiet unwind.

00149 - Polypropylene with solvent adhesive, also very quiet unwind. A good and cheaper alternative to 00150, especially in very cold conditions.

00250 - Polypropylene with solvent adhesive. Very sticky but noisy unwind. Dearer than 00243.

00243 - Polypropylene with acrylic adhesive. Low noise unwind. A nice tape to use at a reasonable price, probably our most popular type.

00255 - Polypropylene with acrylic adhesive. Noisy unwind. The cheapest one we sell and, to be honest, not as good as the rest. However, if it does the job you want it to then why not use it.

PVC with solvent adhesive is naturally quiet when unwound. Polypropylene tapes are noisy.

To counteract this, some years ago, manufacturers put a coating on the top surface of polypropylene tapes which reduced the noise when it was unwound, so it was easier and quieter to use.

With people looking to save money on packaging, a lot of cardboard boxes are now made from cheaper materials - e.g. testliner rather than Kraft.

These boxes have shorter fibres which means the tape doesn't stick as well, so you even though you save money on boxes you may have to spend more on a better tape.

Using

Packaging tape for the UK market was traditionally manufactured in Europe - usually Italy, Germany or France. Over recent years far eastern imports have dominated the market, primarily due to the price. However, the constant bid to force down prices inevitably means quality suffers and there has been a lot of imported tape in the last few years which, quite simply, isn’t good enough to do the job. It goes without saying, that regardless of how cheap something is, it probably isn't worth buying if it doesn’t work.

Tape guns are not expensive and make the application of tape a lot easier. Here we have a standard tape gun, a slightly better version - with more metal parts, and a bench dispenser, which can be screwed down if you are using tape in a fixed position.
